TIN #069 - Gratitude: Your Secret Weapon in Networking
How Gratitude Enhances Your Networking Strategy
Hey Networkers!
Greg here, with your weekly dose of networking wisdom.
This week, we’re focusing on a key ingredient that can transform your networking approach – Gratitude.
Let's explore how gratitude not only makes us feel great but also opens doors in our networking journey.
This issue takes about 4 minutes to read.
But Before We Get Started…
Each week, I post a new podcast with tips you’ll find in the weekly newsletter and bonus stories, wisdom, and motivation. The Introverted Networker podcast is like the weekly newsletter but with additional narration and thoughts from me. Be sure to listen to this week’s podcast and check out the previous episodes of the podcast as well.
The video version of the podcast is available on my YouTube channel.
🌞 Why Gratitude Matters in Networking:
It's easy to overlook, but saying "thank you" can be incredibly powerful.
It's about recognizing the help we've received and acknowledging the people behind our success.
Often, we overlook people who've already impacted our lives.
The people we already know are often our biggest untapped resource. By reigniting these connections, we not only strengthen our existing network but also potentially gain access to their networks. It's a ripple effect that can lead to unexpected and valuable opportunities.
These could be former colleagues, mentors, or friends who've offered advice or support.
How to Identify Who to Thank: Reflect on key moments in your life and career. Who was there for you? Make a list of these people.
Reaching Out: Craft a message that’s personal and heartfelt. Mention specific instances where they helped you. It shows you remember and value their support.
Expressing Gratitude on LinkedIn:
LinkedIn is a fantastic platform for public recognition and reconnecting. Writing a recommendation or giving a shout-out to someone you know is a great way to say “Thank You,” and re-start a conversation with someone you’ve lost touch with.
Writing a Recommendation: This is more than a thank-you note; it's a public endorsement of someone’s skills and character. Here’s how to do it:
Be Specific: Mention how the person helped you. Was it guidance, a referral, or moral support?
Highlight Qualities: Talk about their strengths and how they positively influenced you.
Keep it Concise: A few heartfelt sentences can be more impactful than a lengthy letter.
If you want more details on how to create LinkedIn Recommendations, I laid out all the steps in TIN #012 - Make People Re-Connect With You
Creating a Shout-Out Post: Public posts are a great way to express gratitude and give someone well-deserved recognition.
Mention Their Contribution: Explain how they played a role in your success.
Tag Them: Ensure they and their network see your post.
Be Genuine: Authenticity resonates with your audience and the person you’re thanking.
📝 This Week's Action Plan:
List People You’re Grateful For: Think of those who’ve made a difference in your journey.
Choose Your Approach: A personal message, a LinkedIn recommendation, or a public post – decide based on your comfort level and the nature of your relationship with the person.
Reach Out: Take the step and express your gratitude. Remember, the goal is to be sincere and specific in your thanks.
Remember, networking isn't just about making new connections; it’s also about nurturing and appreciating the ones we already have.
