TIN #023 - How to network in the New Year
Looking back, looking forward, and a tip for your Target Company List
Good Morning 👋 - Greg here.
Today’s issue was going to be my reflection on the first year of this newsletter.
I was going to talk about subscriber growth, publishing every Saturday for 23 weeks, and expanding my own thoughts about networking.
Then I thought, “You aren’t here for that.”
You’re here to become a better networker.
My job is to share tips to help you do that.
So that’s what’s going to happen in this issue.
AND
I am going to share my plans for this newsletter for 2023.
This issue takes less than 3 minutes to read.
But first,
A message about the Community Good podcast from Marney Andes
Marney is an incredible leader who I had the good fortune to work with in my career.
She's also a dynamic speaker and the author of 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘪𝘷𝘦-𝘔𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘴: 8 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘓𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘉𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦.
I was honored to be a guest on Marney's latest episode.
We talk about:
• Networking (of course)
• Quiet Quitting, and why I think it's a stupid concept
• And how to address turnover and disengagement at work
I enjoyed this conversation and hope you will too.
This week’s networking tip
I follow a lot of resume writers, career coaches, and writers who talk about job searching.
When I find something useful, I share it with you.
I always try to put my own spin on it.
Today’s tip comes from Hannah Morgan (again!).
I’ve already highlighted her weekly newsletter in TIN #020, but this idea from one of her Sunday Summary emails was too good not to share.
It’s the American Opportunity Index which highlights the top 250 public companies in the US and ranks them based on:
“three core dimensions of a firm’s opportunity generation: the access they offer to opportunity, the pay they offer in low- and middle-skill roles, and the level of mobility experienced by their employees both within and beyond the firm. And unlike survey-based instruments, it uses massive data sets—big-data analysis of career histories, job postings, and salary sources—to describe the real-world experiences of millions of actual workers.”
You’re thinking, “Great Greg, what am I supposed to do with this info?”
Remember back in TIN #005 when I told you about creating a Target Company List (TCL)?
This is a great tool to help you get ideas for your TCL.
You sort through the companies by industry and rank and decide if you want to add these companies to your TCL.
These are large companies.
If you aren’t interested in working at any of these, you can always use them as a basis to get ideas for other companies.
How do I do that?
Go to LinkedIn
Type the name of one of these companies in the search bar
You’ll get the company’s LinkedIn page in the results
You’ll also get a list of similar companies on the right side of the page
Review these companies and decide if they go on your TCL
Repeat this process with other companies who are already on your TCL
I’m thinking about creating a video showing you how to do this.
If that’s something you’re interested in, let me know in the comments.
What’s next for The Introverted Networker
Since July 2022, this newsletter has grown to almost 400 readers.
Thanks so much for showing up every Saturday morning!
In 2023, I plan to continue to publish a new issue every Saturday morning.
AND
I want to increase my engagement with you by:
Creating how-to videos for the tips I talk about each week
Offering a monthly subscriber-only webinar to answer some of your trickiest networking questions
Designing an online course to teach introverts to become master networkers
I’d love to hear your thoughts on these three goals for 2023.
Would any of these make you a better networker?
If not, what networking problems do you have that I could solve?
Leave your ideas in the comments!
Don't forget to add your ideas in the comments!
